"Who Attacked Cindy Beale?" was one of the standout storylines of Christmas 2024 which saw Cindy Beale be brutally shovelled by a mysterious assailant, as a consequential result of her twisted affair with Junior Knight, the son of her ex-husband George Knight. Cindy's family quickly became distant with her after the attack, which added suspicion to each suspect, in their own ways. The storyline started on 25 December 2024 - Part 2 and concluded on 18 February 2025 in which the attacker was revealed - despite this storyline lasting for only 3 months, events leading up to it began in June 2024 when the pair's affair began. The storyline was a whodunnit.

Suspects and motives[]

There were 9 suspects, who were all members of Cindy's family:

  • Ian Beale - Cindy cheated on Ian and broke his heart, like she did in the 1990s, leading to a mental breakdown.
  • Kathy Cotton - Kathy was aggravated after seeing her son break down over the emotional abuse from Cindy.
  • Peter Beale - Cindy supplied Lauren, his partner, with drugs that may have been damaging to their unborn child.
  • Lauren Branning - Lauren was supplied drugs numerous times by Cindy and abused her status as a recovering addict.
  • George Knight - Junior and Cindy had an affair, which was sickening for George to learn of.
  • Elaine Knight - Infuriated by the reveal of the affair, and the impact it had on the family and public status.
  • Gina Knight - Gina's mum, Cindy, had an affair with her brother, Junior, which was disgusting to discover.
  • Anna Knight - Cindy is Anna's mum, and had an affair with her brother, Junior, which digested Anna.
  • Junior Knight - Junior discovered Cindy only was with him for sex, and a reminder of George, not truly loving him.

Plot[]

Prior to Christmas Day and Attack[]

4 June 2024 - The affair begins[]

After Cindy is rejected by George. Junior helps her in her moment of darkness, she confides in him and they later sleep together, beginning an affair - unbeknownst to Ian, and everyone else. The affair persists throughout the remainder of 2024, with it having numerous ups and downs, though they manage to avoid suspicions for months, much to their approval.

10 October 2024 - Recorded confession[]

When David Wicks returns to Walford, he catches Cindy and Junior kissing in private, therefore Cindy is forced to explain the entire truth to him about the affair, but overshares whilst doing this. Cindy reveals that she is still in love with George, and is only interested in Junior for sex and a reminder of George. Later on, a recording device, owned by Freddie Slater, goes unnoticed by the pair - causing Cindy's entire confession to be on record.

24 December 2024 - Blackmail[]

Elaine unintentionally obtains the audio recording of Cindy's confession, on a USB, and blackmails Cindy with the threat to leave Walford before New Year, else the truth would be exposed. Much to her dismay, Cindy reluctantly agrees and prepares to flee to France with Ian. At a later meet-up with Elaine, she reveals that the USB has been stolen. It is later placed in the Beale-Knight family's Secret Santa, for Ian.

Christmas Day[]

Part 1[]

Cindy and the Beale's spend Christmas with the Knight's. Things are settled upon their arrival, though Cindy quizzes Elaine for further information of the stolen USB. Elaine is still unsure of its whereabouts, and refuses to help Cindy. Later that day, Lauren is continually pushed out by the family due to her relapse of taking drugs (supplied by Cindy).

The rest of Christmas Day flows smoothly, and Cindy continues to show her love for Ian, despite her confessing her love to Junior minutes earlier. Ian also gifts her with a locket previously owned by Lucy Beale. The family's Christmas dinner goes well, and no major conflict is apparent. However, Cindy quickly learns it is Lauren who is behind the disappearance of the USB, and attempts to bribe her with drugs In exchange for the USB. Lauren refuses and doesn't give in to Cindy's manipulation.

A few moments later, Ian opens his gift from the Secret Santa - the USB - this is then played publicly to residents of The Queen Victoria. Cindy is distraught to hear this as her family learn the truth about her, her love for George, her lack of care for Ian and her affair with Junior.

Part 2[]

Cindy attempts to defend herself but fails miserably. She goes against her whole family as they judge her, and states Junior is equally to blame. Cindy then viciously calls out each member of her family for their past mistakes, and criticises them in a harsh manner. She then declares that she is determined to win Ian back, and doesn't care about anyone else, including her children - this sends shockwaves through the family dynamic.

At 45 Albert Square, Cindy tries to restore her connection with Ian, but he reaches a breaking point and chucks her out of the house, with her case packed. Cindy struts through the snowy streets of Walford, and makes a desperate attempt to leave the square after her world fell apart in minutes. Failing, she emotionally enters the Square Gardens but is suddenly hit over the head with a shovel by an unknown attacker, with her locket stolen and is left for dead in the freezing snow.

Post Christmas Day[]

December 2024 and January 2025 - Coma and release[]

Cindy is found by George and Kathy moment after the attack, she is placed into an induced coma for the remainder of 2024 as a result of this. As 2025 commences, Cindy becomes stronger and eventually wakes up. As she is released from hospital, her family become very distant and aggressive towards her - it isn't long before Cindy starts pointing the finger at anyone who is suspicious to her. She has Lauren arrested for the attack, but nothing comes of this.

February 2025 - Further discoveries[]

After going round in numerous circles, Cindy learns her locket was stolen during the attack. She later makes the assumption that it was in fact Ian who tried to kill her, wanting to reclaim Lucy's locket. Feeling in danger, Cindy requests to gain usage of Phil Mitchell's gun to defend herself against Ian, but Phil refuses. Whilst time progresses, Cindy is noticeably divided from the rest of the family, so she tries to prove Ian's guilt and find the locket.

On 18 February 2025, Cindy reaches breaking point and steals Phil's gun, and invades 45 Albert Square, to find Ian with the locket and prove her suspicions correct - however, Ian protests his innocence and claims it wasn't him. As Cindy gets wound up, she begins to threaten him further with the gun. Then, Kathy storms in and reveals she is actually the attacker, stating she has no regrets and wish she had finished the job. Cindy struggles to believe it was Kathy at first - though as she attempts to phone the police, Ian stops and confronts her, to which she reaches an emotional climax and pushes him in front of Reiss Colwell's car, forcibly causing him to swerve into The Queen Victoria, leading to an explosion.

A few days later, following the deaths of Reiss and Martin Fowler, Ian confronts Cindy once again but they both threaten to go to the police, so decide to make an arrangement - Ian gives Cindy the money from the businesses that she is owed, in exchange for her to leave Walford and keep Kathy in the clear. Cindy then makes her departure, announcing that she will certainly be back for Ian and Kathy when the time is right.

May 2025 - Cindy's return[]

Cindy returns on 5 May 2025 and exposes Kathy to the Beale-Knight family, which sparks a revelation for them as everyone was unbeknownst to the true attacker. Ian, therefore, also exposes Cindy for indirectly causing the explosion at The Queen Victoria. A rivalry then begins between Cindy, Ian and Kathy.

The Attacker[]

Kathy Cotton (Christmas 2024)

Kathy Cotton was revealed as the attacker on 18 February 2025 when she confessed this to Cindy herself - this was due to Cindy holding Ian at gunpoint, therefore Kathy spoke up to save her son. Kathy reveals that she didn't regret attacking Cindy, stating her desire to have finished the job that night. She adds on that after seeing the way Ian raged on Christmas night, it forced her to see red and consequently attack Cindy.

(Fun Fact: Kathy was also involved in the previous year's whodunnit, 'The Six'. She unintentionally played a crucial role in the coverup of Keanu Taylor's murder at Christmas 2023, but then directly involved herself with an attempted murder the following Christmas)

Deaths connected to "Who Attacked Cindy Beale?"[]

  • Reiss Colwell (Indirectly caused by Cindy and himself; 19 February 2025) - As a result of Cindy and Ian's feud reaching a climax (due to the overwhelming attack), she pushed him in front of Reiss' car, which caused him to swerve into The Queen Victoria - leading to a ferocious explosion. Reiss was later crushed by falling debris as a result of this explosion, which would not have happened if Cindy was not rivalling against Ian because of the attack.
  • Martin Fowler (Indirectly caused by Cindy and Reiss; 20 February 2025) - Whilst the condition of The Queen Victoria deteriorated, Martin was stuck inside with Stacey Slater and was later crushed by a steel beam, later passing away from cardiac arrest sustained by this injury. Similarly to Reiss, Martin's death was also caused by Cindy and Ian's rivalry.
