Wendy was brought up in the licensed trade and attended the Italia Conti Stage Academy. The beginning of her career was very off-beat. Unlike most actresses, she didn't start with a film, television or stage show, it was a record - she was the female voice on Mike Sarne's record Come Outside, which although made as a gimmick, quickly reached number one in the charts.

Although being best-known as Pauline Fowler, Wendy is also remembered to millions of viewers as a bubbly shopgirl, Miss Brahms in BBC tv's ever-popular comedy series Are You Being Served?. "Over the years, the cast became like a close family," she once said. "We had so many laughs ourselves and never got bored with one another."

EastEnders wasn't Wendy's first bi-weekly drama series for the BBC. In the late 1960s, she played the supermarket manageress in The Newcomers. Other popular early drama series she appeared in include Harpers West One, Dixon of Dock Green and No Hiding Place.

Wendy had a natural flair for comedy, and in her 44 years as an actress had been much in demand for such series as Hugh and I when she first worked with Mollie Sugden, Both Ends Meet, Dad's Army, Hog's Back, Please Sir, Spooners Patch and On The Buses, to name but a few. She had also appeared in several Carry On films, Doctor In Clover and film versions of Are You Being Served?, On The Buses and Bless This House. A cameo role in Albert Finney's film Gumshoe brought rave notices.

On stage Wendy starred in the comedy hits No Sex Please - We're British!, Let's Go Camping and Are You Being Served? In 1980 she toured in a production of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, and played Dandini in the 1983 Christmas pantomime Cinderella at Dartford.

Established as a household name in comedy, Wendy was also a regular guest personality on TV quiz shows such as Give Us a Clue, Celebrity Squares and Blankety Blank.

Wendy enjoyed over twenty tremendous years on EastEnders but in 2006 decided to quit the role of Pauline after having problems with the storyline that was given to her character involving the marriage between Pauline and Joe Macer, and on Christmas Day 2006, Pauline died in the Square.

Wendy hardly appeared in television roles after this, although appeared in many reality shows such as Loose Women and The Paul O'Grady Show. In 2008, Wendy was sadly diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in February 2009, she may be gone, but she will be an actress that will forever be in the hearts of Britain.
