Storylines[]
Mr Atkinson is a court-appointed Warrant Officer. When Mary Smith faces mounting pressure over unpaid court fines following her conviction for soliciting, he visits her home to demand immediate payment of £30. Mary, struggling financially, cannot meet the demand. Present during the visit are Ethel Skinner and Dot Cotton, who offer to contribute £5 each to help Mary avoid arrest.
Despite their support, Mary fails to pay or attend her scheduled court appearance.
On 19 May 1987, Mr Atkinson returns to take her into custody and escort her to court. There, Mary is informed she will likely be issued a Suspended Committal Warrant—granting her a final seven-day grace period to settle the fine. If she fails to do so, she risks being sent to prison.
