Storylines[]
Early on Saturday morning, Grant Mitchell received a mysterious phone call at the Queen Vic which caused him some anxiety. Later, when his brother, Phil, asked if he was coming round to 'The Arches' to help with some work, Grant replied that he was waiting for a phone call. A short time later, Grant went round and told Phil that he needed a couple of hours off that afternoon for a bit of business. When Phil asked for details, Grant told him, "Don't ask!" Sharon Mitchell became concerned about the mysterious phone calls and her husband's furtiveness so when Phil came by the pub at dinnertime; she asked him, "What's Grant up to?" Phil told her that all he knew was that Grant planned to be out that afternoon. That afternoon, Steer, and an associate named Charlie Keating visited Grant at the pub. Steer had planned a robbery at Keating's place of employment, a betting shop. Grant had agreed to drive the getaway car for them. The job was set for quarter-to-three that afternoon. After Steer and Keating left the pub, Sharon confronted Grant and demanded to know what was going on. When Grant evaded her questions and started to move, she told him that if he was not back by 2.30, not to bother coming back! Grant went straight-away to the 'arches' and berated Phil for telling Sharon that he'd planned to be out that afternoon. Then he told Phil about the job with Steer and Keating and that he couldn't back out of a job but that if he weren't back at the pub by 2.30, he'd lose his wife.
Phil replied that he would drive the get-away car! Grant returned to the Queen Vic promptly at 2.30. Meanwhile, DS Jackson and DC Firth had been tracking Grant's movements all day from their unmarked police car. Jackson had received a tip from an informant that Grant would be involved in the robbery of a bookie's that afternoon and these policemen hoped Grant would lead them to the scene of the crime. Jackson reckoned that the theft would take place between 3 and 4 o'clock after the bookie had brought in some money. So when they saw that Grant was still in the Square at that time, they concluded the informant must have gotten it wrong and left. Grant's next involvement with a robbery leads to the devastation of the Queen Vic.
