Hattie Tavernier made her first appearance 5 July 1990. She is portrayed by Michelle Gayle. Her final appearance was on 24 February 1994, portrayed by an uncredited actress.
Storylines[]
Hattie moved to Albert Square in 1990 with her family - father Celestine Tavernier, mother Etta Tavernier, brothers Clyde and Lloyd Tavernier and grandfather Jules Tavernier.
Hattie excelled in her O-level examinations, which contrasted with twin brother Lloyd, who was a troublemaker. In 1991, after receiving a strong set of results, Hattie left her parents disappointed when she chose to become a waitress for Ian Beale. Ian unfortunately mistook her good intentions for something more personal and, after a successful catering evening one night, Ian made a pass at Hattie, which resulted in her kneeing him in the groin. Despite Ian's misinterpretation of Hattie's enthusiasm, she continued to work for him and was eventually promoted to his personal assistant.
Hattie began dating local chef Steve Elliot. Their relationship was greeted to hostility from older brother Clyde, who felt that Steve was too old for her and she should be dating someone more similar to her in age. This did not stop Hattie and Steve from dating however, and in December 1992, Hattie chose to propose to Steve. Steve accepted her proposal and they then moved in together.
By July 1993, Steve chose to runaway after feeling suffocated by Hattie. Not wanting Hattie to know he was gone until it was too late, he left a note for her in their flat. However, Hattie read it sooner than he planned for her to. She rushed over to Southampton where he was planning to board a ferry and attempted to make amends with him, but failed. After Steve had gone, Hattie confided in Clyde that she was pregnant with his child. She considered having an abortion but ultimately kept the baby, although she suffered a miscarriage shortly after and blamed herself.
Towards the end of 1993, Hattie began to frequently feud with Ian's wife, Cindy Beale, who was heavily pregnant with twins. Cindy grew jealous of Hattie and Ian's relationship and, when Ian started taking Cindy's side, Hattie quit her job and slapped Cindy across the face. She left Albert Square for Norwich in December 1993 and never returned after finding love up there.
In 1994, Steve arrived in Norwich to speak to Hattie. However, he saw Hattie talking to another man in a street and they got in his car together, hinting that Hattie had found new love. He realised that she was not returning to Walford and he decided to return to Walford alone. Hattie has not been seen or heard from since.
