Frank's mind is overwhelmed by recent events. He wallows in self-pity at home. Bianca is sickened to learn Natalie has bagged a part-time job at the café when she asked for one there recently but was rejected. Alan and Carol give Robbie a stern talking to.

Having heard a loud bang from inside, residents at the Vic express interest in what has happened. Alan and Sanjay head outside to find the overturned car has crashed into the wall of Number 55. Upon learning the car has crashed into her house wall, Michelle assesses the damage and is unimpressed, worrying what could have happened if Vicki was playing outside at the time. Ambulances arrive and Robbie is extracted from the car. Bianca identifies Robbie's face as he is pulled from the wreckage and cries. She rushes home and tells Carol what has happened. Carol heads to the ambulance and off to hospital with Robbie.

Dougie asks Grant for £400 so he can get his hands on some additional information. Grant tries to scrape the money together but can only get hold of £260.

Phil continues his phone around for Willmott-Brown and finally gets hold of an address.

Carol is questioned by the police. She insists that Robbie was not driving and must have been flung into the seat when the crash occurred.

Sharon is mortified to find the till £200 down. She goes to confront Dougie but he is nowhere to be found. Grant admits that he gave Dougie the money and she kisses him, thinking he is a conman and will no longer return.

Phil heads to the location of Willmott-Brown where he meets Elizabeth, an ex-wife. He learns that Willmott-Brown is back in prison for raping another woman.

Bianca confronts Kathy over the job she gave to Natalie.

Michelle loses her temper with Robbie after finding him laughing in the café with Kevin.

Sanjay turns to the betting shop again after losing the money he gambled yesterday. A win comes in for him and he is thrilled, but his happiness is short-lived when the announcer reveals an enquiry into the win.

Frank tells Pat that he is going out for some fresh air. He tenderly kisses her forehead and claims he will not be long, but after heading out of Number 41, he solemnly walks into the market and away from the Square for good.

Sharon is unimpressed when Dougie returns. She tells Grant, who sneaks upstairs to find out what is going on. He opens Dougie's bedroom door quietly and is speechless upon glimpsing him holding a shotgun.

Notes[]

  • Last appearance of Frank Butcher until 25 December 1995 - Part 1.
  • Return of Sonia Jackson, last seen on 23 December 1993.
  • This episode was the last time the jazzy theme tune was used. The opening and closing credits sequence of the birds eye view of the East End of London remained the same. The new theme tune was an updated version of the original Simon May 1985-1993 theme, but not as haunting and the background music was more electric instead of the old church bell type sound in the original credits.
  • This was also the last episode where EastEnders was shown twice a week. From the 11th April, the show went to three days a week (with an extra episode on Mondays).
  • Radio Times synopsis: The scriptwriters have had it in for Frank Butcher over the past year. His wife has been in prison for killing a girl while drink-driving, he has found his runaway daughter pregnant, his youngest daughter has been bullied at school and he has had to close his cab company after a rival business threatened his wife. So when money became a decidedly touchy subject too, Frank resorted to an insurance fiddle, calling in the services of Phil Mitchell to torch his business. But Frank has not been altogether honest with his family about the state of his accounts, so when a loss adjuster from the insurance company comes to check the books, poor old Pat does her best to help them in their enquiries. Frank has only one option left: he goes out for a long walk.
  • Viewing Figures: UK broadcast - 20,900,000 viewers (chart placing unknown).
