Grant walks out of prison. Phil learns he has been released and had all his charges dropped by the police. Sharon panics, as does Phil, as they realise they have to tell him the truth about their affair. Mark collects the horse bets and places them in time for the races. Rose returns to the Square, telling Pete that she cannot live without him. He is later confronted by Alfie's cousin, Jackie and her husband Sanger, who threaten him. He receives a phone call and rushes to see Rose, who has been hospitalised by Jackie after being beaten up. Pete then tells her that they cannot scare them, and they can run away together to start a new life. He spreads the news of his plans to his family and asks Arthur to take over his stall, but he tells him he doesn't think he can manage it and turns to Mark instead. Frank shows his face at the Vic. The horse that the residents have bet on wins, and they celebrate at the Vic. Phil decides to stay at the Vic with Sharon so that he can protect her when Grant returns, but Grant does not show, instead phoning Phil and asking to meet him. Phil arrives at the bridge and spots Grant. |

Notes[]
- This episode saw the debut of the programme's second title sequence, brought in to give the show a modern theme. The first sequence had been abandoned when it was decided that the sequences needed more of an interesting pattern rather than a plain black and white aerial photograph of the East End of London.
- A brand-new theme tune was also introduced along with the new title sequences, and many refer to it as the "jazzy theme" for its saxophone beats. The theme tune also shared the same purpose for the brand-new title sequences; it was introduced to give the show a more modern feel. The original theme tune was scrapped in the previous episode. This alternative version proved to be very unpopular with the public, and it's the second shortest-lived theme tune the show has ever produced only lasting eleven months, after the 1991 stereo theme which only lasted four months.
- Radio Times synopsis: Pat is sent to prison, while Grant is released. Rose decides she can't live without Pete. Today also sees the first screening of an updated title sequence, with a full-colour map and pre-recorded music.
- Viewing Figures: UK broadcast - 16,840,000 viewers (chart placing unknown).
