Summary[]
Shirley knows something is wrong with Mick and refuses to go anywhere until she knows the truth, forcing her son to delve into his childhood. Stuart and Rainie also have to face the music with their past transgressions, leaving lasting effects on their relationship.

Rainie claims to Stuart she lost the baby in the accident and is relieved. She adds that her mind is made up - they are over. Shirley is taken aback when Mick insists he was helping Katy, as Frankie went on the missing list. Shirley begs Mick to stop punishing her for her past and knows something big is going on. She will not let him go anywhere until he opens up. Stuart refuses to let Rainie walk out on him and blames Keegan for their loss. He rampages across the Square to confront Keegan so Rainie confesses there was never a baby. Mick explains how he was seen as a "problem kid", and while others did not see anything in him, Katy, his social worker, did. He details a time he got another boy into trouble and went to his bedroom, where he found a note from Katy, reminding him that she was there if he needed to talk to her. He went to see her out of curiosity and she gave him advice and put her job on the line for him. She made him feel safe. A broken Rainie admits to Stuart she has suffered a phantom pregnancy. She thinks she is failure and cannot understand why Stuart would stick with her. Stuart sees past Rainie's self-doubts and encourages her to let him help. Mick continues recalling his past with Katy to Shirley. Shirley learns that Katy and Mick broke off contact when Lee began secondary school, and then listens to Mick reminisce about the first time he got drunk thanks to Katy bringing over cans of lager. Shirley thinks Katy was irresponsible for giving Mick alcohol, but Mick thinks Shirley is just jealous. He loses his temper before hastily walking off. Stuart helps Rainie accept that he loves her and they are meant to be together by showing her a box of items he has kept which reminds him of things they have done together. Shirley phones Katy so that Mick can talk to her about whatever is playing on his mind. Mick disapproves of Shirley's intervention and vociferates, sending her away. Rainie and Stuart get cosy on the sofa and enjoy ice-cream and tomato ketchup together. Mick is speechless when Katy steps out of a black cab and calls his name in the Square. |
