Summary[]

When Peter is given some unexpected news he tries to keep it from Ian. Shirley hits rock bottom and receives support from an unlikely Walford resident.


Peter is concerned when he wakes up on the day of Beales' re-opening to find Ian is not in the house. He heads to Lauren's to check that she got his apology text. She tells him that he doesn't need to explain himself and agrees to help out at the restaurant which pleases him. As he goes to leave, she states that they are just friends – it's awkward. Peter eventually finds Ian slumped by the war memorial. Ian is gutted that Jane isn't there to do the re-opening with him but Peter reminds him that they have each other and presents him with some new Chef's Blacks. Ian is pleasantly surprised when Peter announces he has brought back up in the form of Lauren and Denise to help with the re-opening. He is further delighted when a whole crowd of Walford residents pile in to the restaurant. Masood awkwardly tells Ian that he is doing a good job - Shabnam tells Masood that he is proud of him but he declares that he is only there to support Denise and Peter. Peter is rocked when DC Summerhayes turns up. He tells her it's a bad time and that she cannot talk to Ian. Summerhayes tells Peter that the coroners have released Lucy's body. Peter asks her to go and promises to talk to Ian. Denise spots Summerhayes but Peter lies about why she was there – saying that she was just informing them that Jake was on remand. Denise is suspicious. Later, she confronts Peter regarding the real reason behind Summerhayes' visit. Ian walks in on the conversation and demands to know what they are talking about – he is shell shocked when he hears the news and runs out of Beales – straight to the Coker's. Ian tells Les that he wants to see Lucy in the Chapel of Rest. After hesitating by the door he realises that he can't do it right now, and leaves. Ian is fuming that Peter didn't tell him the news about Lucy's body straight away – Peter tells him that he didn't want to ruin the restaurant's opening. He tells Ian that they have to move forward and start living again. That night, Peter goes into the chapel of rest where Lucy is. He says that she has always been afraid of the dark, but that he is there now. He kisses her forehead and spends the night next to her.

Shirley, depressed from her rejection from Dean, enters the Minute Mart and asks for a bottle of Vodka. She tells Denise and Shabnam that Dean is back but that he doesn't want to see her. Denise suggests that vodka is not the answer – Shirley angrily responds by reminding Denise that she is not perfect and asks where her kids are. Back at Ian's, Shirley tells Denise that Dean hates her and that everyone she gets close to she ends up losing – maybe Dean is better off without her. Denise tells her that she needs to stop feeling sorry for herself and that there will always be a bond between her and Dean that cannot be broken. She reminds Shirley of the video that Kevin took of her and the kids in the garden – it shows that she once was a mum to those kids and they loved her for it. Shirley turns up at Bianca's and begs to look for the video in the loft. Bianca has to leave and says that they had a huge clear out when Pat died anyway – Shirley is distraught. Phil sees an upset Shirley in the Square gardens but he is quickly taken away by Sharon for a lunch date. While having lunch in Ian's restaurant, Jay arrives and tells Phil that he needs to come quickly to see Shirley. Phil finds her drunkenly slumped on Bridge Street – she tells him that she is desperate to see the video of her and her children that Denise had mentioned. Phil bribes Tiffany to dig out the video that Shirley is after. She is overwhelmed and tries to kiss Phil. He firmly tells her that he is only doing this because he wants to help her; nothing more. Back at The Vic, tears stream down Shirley's face as she watches the video of her with her young children. When Mick walks in on this scene, he tells Linda that he is determined to find Dean and bring him home.
