Summary[]
Michelle goes into labour but Pauline is nowhere to be seen. Angie panics as she discovers Sharon is missing. Meanwhile, Mary has her first day's kitchen work in the hospital canteen.
Michelle starts having pains early in the morning and Pauline is sitll missing. Lou tells Arthur to stop flapping and start calling around for Pauline, so he went off to the café telephoning relatives where she might have gone. Lou tries to keep Michelle reassured, but Michelle is adamant that she wasn't going to hospital without her mum. Pauline comes home just as Lou was starting to show worry about Michelle having the baby before she could get to hospital. As soon as she came in, they send Arthur to let hospital know they are on the way and fetch Pete with his van. Pauline had been at Rita's around the corner to clear her mind and Lou tells her she could go back to Rita's if she likes, knowing that Pauline had no intention of missing the event. Pete arrives in front of Number 45 in his van. Michelle gets in the front seat. Pauline climbs in the back with the vegetables saying she knew were her place was! Den jumps aside as Pete drives up Bridge Street. Pete sticks his head out the window and tells Den to watch out. At the hospital, the midwife gives Michelle a quick check over and tells her she is a fast worker and would beat the woman next door who'd come in the night before. The baby arrives without any trouble except for Pauline trying to tell the midwife that she should give Michelle painkillers. Arthur and Lou come and see the baby and Michelle gets tense when Arthur says, "Now who does she look like?" Lou comments with a smile at Michelle that she looked a bit like Michelle. Pete and Kathy send Michelle some fruit and Lofty sends a big basket of flowers. Pauline goes back to the Vic and tells everyone the news. As soon as Den hears, he calls Jan and was off to meet her. He tells her about the baby and she asks why he didn't go to see it. He tells her she doesn't understand the situation but dropped her at her flat saying he has to get back. Jan is miffed that they hadn't been together for some time and she had left work to meet him for such a brief visit. Pauline goes back to see Michelle and she seems relieved to know that Pauline had told everyone about the baby. That night, Michelle calls the Vic hoping Den would answer, but it was Angie. Angie thinks the silent caller is Jan! Meanwhile, Den charms his way past the night nurse. He tells her that he was a relative all the way from Brighton and Michelle would surely be upset if he didn't get in to see her. On seeing Den there by her bed, Michelle saysm "Take her, she's yours." Den holds the baby for a few seconds. Michelle says she has named the baby Vicki - after Albert and Victoria. After a short visit, Den says, "look after her for me" and quickly leaves. Angie is in a panic when she discovers Sharon missing that morning and Den starts calling her friends. Debbie shows up for her first day's work at the pub but they are too distracted to give her any instructions in her new job as a barmaid. That night, Andy is served and she tells him about Angie knocking back the gins all day. Angie asks Pauline's advice since she'd dealt with Mark running away and Pete tells her to get the police involved. Ali's taxi has been sold for scrap and the loan for another one has been approved. Mehmet finds them a Ford Cortina for £2,000 through a mate and Ali works at writing adverts for "OzCabs". |
