It is Christmas Day in Albert Square. The Beales and Jackson's all open their presents as does Roy Evans and Pat Butcher and Ricky Butcher and Janine Butcher. The Fowler household is not so jovial as Arthur Fowler is languishing in prison on remand. Arthur is shoved out of the queue for the phone by a prisoner. He is befriended by a Scottish prisoner who is his cellmate. Pauline Fowler is adamant that Arthur has been stitched up and someone else stole the £20'000 Flowering Wilderness Fund. Willy Roper, the real culprit is befriending the Fowlers and playing innocent. At No 41 Albert Square the Butchers and Roy invite the Beales over for Christmas and tell George as Santa to come over and give presents to them later on. Pat says to Roy that she has been a bit miserable really but is now happier than ever. The doorbell goes, they think it is Santa. They all stand in the lounge waiting for Santa. Pat smiles and says "Look who it is". But the man who walks from the hallway into the lounge is none other than Pat's estranged husband Frank Butcher. Pat's smile soon is wiped off her face.
