Synopsis

Arthur has to pass on some unwelcome news about Michelle to Pauline. Alan almost comes to blows with a newcomer to the Square. Robbie and Grant await the birth of Freida's puppies. Nigel puts on a brave face for Clare. Sonia is playing the trumpet. She can now make one or two notes so it is a horrendous racket and she annoys everyone. She goes out into the square to play, and the man who's redecorating the old hair salon hears her. He has an ancient reel-to-reel tape machine in there and is playing some crappy old band music on it while he works. He offers Sonia some advice and chats to her about trumpet players, he checks the trumpet and says that F is a very hard note, but there's nothing wrong with the trumpet. Then he eats a sweet and offers her one, and then also offers to let her listen to some real trumpet players, on his tape machine. She gets scared and runs away, goes home and tells Carol and Alan about it. Alan goes round to threaten the man and tells him to leave the child alone and never let him catch him near Sonia again. The man agrees rather surprisedly.

Pauline goes to see Nigel and tells him to make the most of the time he has with Clare as she's lost a daughter too.

Nigel asks Clare what she wants for Xmas, and it's the computer. Phil and Grant arrange to lend Nigel the cash for it (£500).

Phil apologises to Grant, and tells him to ensure it's a secret from Peggy, and Grant congratulates Phil.

Martin comes home from school with nits, and Pauline sends Arthur out to get shampoo for it.

Arthur is trying to tell Pauline about Michelle because he has an air mail letter from her, starting with "by the time you get this, Dad will have told you.."

Of course, when Pauline hears, she becomes even less rational than usual, hard though that is to imagine, and says obviously she will have to go to America and bring Michelle home as she can't look after herself.
