Derek Evans made his first appearance on 1 March 2007. He is portrayed by Simon Lowe. Derek is a social worker who has appeared numerous times.

On 1 March 2007, he visits Bert Atkinson and his grandson Jay Brown when Bert is trying to get a residency order for Jay to live with him permanently. Jay charms Derek, offering him a cup of tea and talking to him politely, impressing him.

On 10 January 2008, Derek visits Tanya Branning and her sister Rainie Cross.

In October 2008, he attempts to sort out Jay's foster care problems when Billy Mitchell offers to care for him, as Jay does not want Dawn Swann to be his foster mother. Derek inspects the flat above The Queen Victoria public house, and allows Jay to stay with Billy, despite Roxy Mitchell's messiness.

On 3 July 2009, he visits Denise Wicks after Jordan Johnson's mother Trina reports her to the police, claiming that Denise has been abusing Jordan.

On 7 June 2010, he visits Phil Mitchell to assess his family including his children Louise and Ben, who has assaulted Jordan Johnson.

On 27 July 2010, he visits Phil and Peggy Mitchell to say that Louise's mother Lisa Fowler has made an application to see her daughter. Derek explains that the final decision is not up to Phil and Peggy says that Derek is a typical social worker – an interfering, home-wrecking busybody. Derek responds sarcastically and leaves. When Peggy returns Louise to Lisa, they contact Derek again, and when he arrives, Phil steals his bag to get Lisa's address.

On 9 April 2015, he attends to see Kat and Alfie Moon after Kat tried to commit suicide to asses her but Kat was unwilling to talk and Derek left.

On 2 July 2015, Derek visits Shirley Carter and Buster Briggs to discuss them having custody of their granddaughter, Jade Green.

On 4 May 2016, he visits 89 George Street to discuss whether Jay can still live in there with Billy, Honey, Will and Janet because he is on the sex offenders register.

He returned to speak with Honey again on 26 August 2016 about Jay having drugs in the house and that if he continued to stay there Will and Janet could be taken into care.

On 20 December 2016, he tells Sharon Mitchell that her step-daughter must take priority of Jay and that he needs to move out or Child Services will take her.
