Storylines[]
After selling the 'Merc', Frank Butcher was still short of cash to pay the tax bills. His remaining assets consisted of a used car business, part ownership in the Bridge Street Café, a time-share holiday apartment and equity in the Bed & Breakfast. Dismissing Pat's objections, he decided to sell the Bed & Breakfast. Charles Raymond, an investor, came round to look at it and, liking what he saw, offered to buy it but he needed the whole property, including the attached house which was used as the Butcher Family residence. Charles reckoned the market value to be £200,000 and sweetened Frank by offering to stand the estate agent's fee as well. He left Frank to think about it. Later that day, Christine Petis telephoned Frank to inform him that the tax inspector had finished going over his sales records and bank deposits for the past six years and the amounts did not agree with what he'd declared. Frank's tax bill had jumped from £11,000 to £20,000! Frank arrived home late that night to tell Pat that they were out of debt but had no roof over their heads.
