Barney Mitchell is the son of Zack Hudson and Nicola Mitchell, although he is the legal son of Teddy Mitchell. He is also the half-brother of Harry Mitchell, Peach Dean and Dolly Dean-Hudson, and nephew of Sharon Watts. He made his first appearance on 26 June 2024. He is portrayed by Lewis Bridgeman.
Storylines
Barney arrives in Walford with his dad and brother looking for Stevie Mitchell. He's given some money and told to go and buy a burger while they look for Stevie. Barney keeps the money and decides to read in the square gardens, where Avani Nandra-Hart tells him where the local shops and tube station are. They later find Stevie at the hospital, and Barney meets his long lost family and discovers Billy Mitchell is his uncle.
Barney later moves into 1 Albert Square and talks to Avani more, and the two become best friends. When Avani begins seeing older boy Mason, Barney catches the two and tells him Avani lied about her age, however he doesn't care she is fifteen. Mason later pressures Avani into sleeping with him, and when she texts Mason saying she had condoms, being seen by Davinder Gulati. Davinder later tells their mother Priya Nandra-Hart, and Avani lies and says Barney is her boyfriend. After refusing to sleep with Mason, Avani returns home injured, and Davinder tells Ravi Gulati about what her saw on Avani's phone and that the contact she was texting was called M. Ravi assumed it is Barney after being told by Priya they were dating, and tracks him down and holds him over the railway bridge. After the incident at the railway bridge, Barney covers for Ravi when the police question his involvement in the incident, saying that it was just another one of his 'YouTube stunts'. Later on, Barney shares his concern about Teddy getting revenge on the Panesars, and wishes only to reconnect with Avani. The next day, Barney and Avani discuss how they wish that their parents did not begin a war against each other after seeing the Panesar call centre burned to a crisp, Barney and Avani then reconcile as he goes to buy her a milkshake in McKlunky's. Barney opens up and explains how he felt a closeness with his mum and believes that he understood her much more than the other members of the family.
Barney and Teddy play a game of chess at the table and talk things through, with Teddy putting pressure on Barney to carry out self-defence classes and act more like a man which Barney clearly dislikes the idea of. Teddy discusses this with Billy Mitchell and he is advised to treat Barney better and allow him to be who he wants to be in order to prevent him from turning out like Ben Mitchell (in Billy's words). Teddy later returns home and apologises to Barney.
Teddy, Barney and Harry settle down to watch a football game. However, as the game is ongoing, Barney leaves the room holding his phone and takes a call. This is revealed to be his mother, Nicola Mitchell. A few days later, Harry catches Barney on the phone again, in which Barney is forced to tell Harry the truth after Harry incorrectly guesses that Barney has a girlfriend. Harry tells the news to Teddy, and to his distaste attempts to try and talk to Barney about it. However, Teddy is too late, as he finds a letter on the table from Barney which states that he has left the Square temporarily to visit Nicola, who is supposedly back in London.
On 4 November 2024, Barney returns to Walford from a visit with his mother. Teddy and Harry spot him walking past the Arches, Teddy tries talking to Barney but he appears distant. Teddy tells Harry to try and have a word with Barney to ask him about how it went on with his mother. Later that day, Teddy looks up at the 'for sale' sign at Peggy's and tells Harry that he may know how to get Barney on board, implying that he be looking into buying Peggy's. Harry then decides to take Barney out for lunch at Beale's Eels. He tries to discuss their mother with Barney, asking him if she fed him and saying that she doesn't even deserve the name of 'mum'. This causes Barney to become annoyed and he refers to Teddy as 'him', causing Harry to flip out and push Barney's pie off of his plate and onto his lap. Teddy walks in and sees the mini conflict; looking at Harry with disgust, he takes Barney out of Beale's Eels and back to school.
