Alex Atkins was the father of Gray Atkins and grandfather of his children Mia, Mackenzie and Jordan Atkins. He was first mentioned on 2 December 2019.

In December 2019, while attending a therapy session with his wife, Chantelle Atkins, Gray opens up about his childhood. He claims that his father was strict and had very high standards, often taking his anger out on Gray and his mother. Gray states that he doesn’t remember much of his father, as he eventually left when he was young, but remembers one day while he was playing with a toy, his father came home from work and smashed it to pieces, not saying a word. This extremely effected Gray as he got older, resulting in him becoming an abuser and killing his wife.

In September 2021, Gray gets a phone call from an unknown number, but when he answers it he’s shocked to learn that it’s his father, contacting him after years of absence. Alex tells Gray that he’s in a hospice, dying and that he wants to see him, but Gray refuses, saying he’s 10 years too late. Later, Gray opens up to Whitney Dean about the phone call, despite him being adamant that he isn’t visiting his father, Whitney tries to convince Gray, telling him it could be his last chance to make things right. Gray eventually agrees to see Alex, and the next day him and Whitney go to the hospice. While Whitney leaves the room to get coffees, it is revealed that Alex wasn’t abusive like Gray claimed him to be, when in fact, it was Gray who was abusing his mother, once braking her arm. Even after all that, Gray’s mother still loved him and told everyone what a lovely boy he was, until she died of unknown causes. Alex tells Gray that he knows his wife, Chantelle, was killed during a domestic incident and says he’s worried for him, knowing that he has anger issues. But before he can say anything else, Gray manipulates him and says he doesn’t know what he talking about, because of the drugs he’s on. A month later, Gray is informed that Alex has died.
