Families in EastEnders are such a nightmare that I've just taken to using personal discretion and general opinion amongst the fanbase in the past. For example on the current characters page I've just taken the Panesars and Gulatis to be one and the same and Whitney to be a member of the Jackson family.

I think usually its quite obvious on a case-by-case basis who belongs where but if there is doubt it can just be opened up to discussion amongst the mods & admins. Certainly in the case of Sandy and Jim it would make sense to have them as members of the Cottons given that is Sandy's only real affiliation and Jim's longstanding association with the family despite not technically being part of the family legally or by blood pretty much qualifies him too.

I believe our method is that it is whoever is the main focus of the doof doof, so therefore if, for example, the back of someone's head appears then that does not count. I've always felt from a statistics point of view this is quite bad practice because it relies on discretion and there are no foolproof parameters you can put in place to deal with what should count but it has been going on so long now that I don't think there's any appetite to change that and retroactively go back and re-do the doof doofs.

I do think that the Doof Doof counting method is quite unclear and confusing - I agree with Kelvin that proper guidelines for how to count it should be published and also linked on the main year pages because I imagine some fans are confused when they see disparities between our count and other people's which simply count anyone in shot at all on the last frame.

I don't know if it is possible to automatically hide certain sections of infoboxes so that they are only visible if the user selects a "Show" button? I feel like I've seen that on other wikis but maybe not - if so it may be the best way of handling certainly the nickname box as it would help de-clutter but not actually remove information? Not too bothered about it though - I feel like a lot of the nicknames sections on here need pared down as they have been added to a bit overzealously.

I feel like this is a good opportunity to mention something which has been preying on my mind as of late - I've noticed a lot of editors adding announcements of future storylines (a recent example would be Ben's rape) and announced departures to character pages which I feel like violates the wiki's non-spoiler policy - really I feel like the only page on which spoilers like that should be allowed on is the List of current characters page

What do you all think about that?

I think these are good ideas, I know moderators like Jacob are extremely active so for example I'm sure we'll be able to catch and block troublesome users a lot quicker if these changes are made!

And there's never any harm in keeping the roles open for users to potentially join.

I think this is a good idea.

I wonder what you think of also including characters who only make guest/cameo appearances in this table instead of in the main characters table, eg Peggy and Grant Mitchell and Tiffany Butcher-Baker for 2022? I feel like these appearances somewhat just clutter up the bottom end of the table, and if we are introducing a recurring table then we might as well make the main characters table a proper table for only characters who had regular status at some point in the year.

Character durations

Hi all,

I think we need to decide which way character durations should be formatted - I know some on the Wiki have recently been changing some characters' durations to be displayed as, for example, "2020-22" instead of "2020-2022".

In my opinion, the standard should remain as "2020-2022" - the vast majority of durations on the Wiki are already formatted this way and if the other format is used it then creates inconsistencies as some durations will still need to remain with full years displayed as they straddle two centuries, eg "1996-2002".

Hi,

I think that changing "Cast" to "Credits" and "Synopsis" to "Summary" would be great - my only concern was that it might be far too much effort to change but if the bot is able to do it as Kelvin said then I think that those terms represent the content far more accurately so the changes would be welcome.

Doesn't sound like the bot would really make it that much quicker than going through it manually. In all honesty, it may not even be worth changing to the new format. It's not as if the old format is unclear in any way, and it seems like a lot of effort for something which at the end of the day isn't going to affect a whole lot.

Back on the subject of the thread however, it appears that everyone who has commented so far is largely in agreement that we should stick with not including breaks in durations - would it be okay for me to go and change durations back to be consistent with that?

It seems that Phil Mitchell's hiatus from 2003 is already recognised in his duration not only on the EastEnders Wiki, but also on Wikipedia and Walford Web so I would therefore say that as it seems to be widely accepted that Steve left the show during this period that it should remain the case that this is reflected in his duration.

I think that breaks for over a year could potentially be considered on a case-by-case basis however for Stacey I would definitely think she should not be marked as having left in 2019 considering she still played a major role in storylines (constant referrals to Stacey, "when Stacey comes back" etc...), did some voice work for the show during her break (I believe in May of this year?) and I think even popped up for a few days at one point so to consider her as not part of the show would be preposterous in my opinion.

If there is a situation where the actor is on a break from the show for over a year and is for all intents and purposes plays no role in the show (unlike Stacey) then I am of the opinion that maybe in that case we could consider marking them as absent in their duration however. This should be really rare though, the only example which comes to mind for me is that of Ben Mitchell, who left with some finality (although I believe it was always intended to be a temporary break for the character) in January of 2019 but returned only 8-9 months later, albeit under a new actor. I would expect that we would have marked the character as absent from the show during that time although our hand was forced to not do that because it is generally accepted that something like "2014-2019, 2019-" should not be used for durations so we ended up having to stick with "2014-".

Aside from rare exceptions like that which I listed however I am of the opinion that breaks should never be included in durations.

You can use VPNs to view certain sites. I don't know if you have done this already. You can use a VPN to access the BBC iPlayer website, where you can view EastEnders episodes from a month ago. The only other way of watching old EastEnders episodes is buying physical videos of them; I know some users on this wiki own these and may be able to upload some onto sites for you. I know the video sharing site Dailymotion has a lot of old and recent episodes; try searching a date or episode number on there. It would be very difficult to collect every single episode and watch them. It may be easier to just read over this wiki and Wikipedia if you want to find out backstory. Soaps are made in a way that you can start watching at any time and very soon it'll feel like you've been watching since the beginning, as storylines go by on a regular cycle.
